lower costs, and more energy efficient, given how much power the ESP guzzles. \m/
I've been working on this, but there's a uC between the ESP and the NRF that runs some logic.
Would love to see a project that does this directly

Yup, ESP is power efficient enough for a WiFi device but WiFi just isn't a fit for ultra low power sensors. Check out my project https://hackaday.io/project/4648-analogio-a-full-stack-iot-platform I'll definitely be moving this "direct" version forward.
