TriState-COW, HackerBox

COW = (California, Oregon, Washington).

Similar projects worth following
Hah! get it TriState.. I know not as funny as I thought it was.

The COW at the end of TriState is the box's current three destinations. If another TriState box is created it should have the three letter designation assigned to it. That way we know where it's going and if it somehow went out of its designated boundaries.

This project is referring to a new sudo local hacker box that will visit primarily California, Oregon, and Washington states. I liked the Traveling hacker box so much I thought we should have another.

More information will be added to the project as I get ready the first box and first few people to do a trial run.

If you are interested in participating please leave a comment and request to join the project. A google survey will be created soon to obtain specific information needed to participate in the project.

also Ill update a picture soon.

Box current destination : California . Stop # 4

Box current rotation : Oregon -> Washington -> California -> Oregon -> ?

how to register

To make my life easier I've made a quick Google form for people to fill out.

  1. Fill out the survay Tri-state hacker box survay
  2. Join the project.
  3. Live in either California, Washington, or Oregon.
  4. Have fun!

Box details

the first box will be a large flat rate box shipped using usps.

It's a box full of awsome hacker junk what more can I say :)

This entry is a little late - so it's out of order. I received the box from Nick Sayer.

Participating in the last traveling hackerbox was a lot of fun - so much so that I wanted to do another. I was definitely hooked! I wasn’t the only one thinking of continuing either...soon after that one ended (or rather stopped), the last person I sent the previous box too was also hooked. Thus the sprout of a new traveling hackerbox that includes California, Oregon, and Washington - the Traveling COW. Kudos goes out to @Jeremy g. for initiating this box and seeding it with all kinds of goodies. (Also, for coming up with the awesome name.) So glad I was able to be apart of this one too. Here is the start of it...

    My contributions…

I was low on stock so I wasn’t able to add some of my USB Tester stuff except for the VA Tester but I did add some other goodies that I had plenty to share with. A while back my dad found a guy online that had a bunch of parts he was giving away as he no longer needed to build some sort of kit he had made. My dad thinking of me, handed them over my way. I ended up with a bunch of goodies...actually more than I probably will ever use at all. So here is what I put into the box to share with the fellow hacker…

Here are the few items I took out and hope to put to good use.

OH! And in the end, I couldn't resist the LCD display , it will make for a fun project...

Can't wait to do this again!

  • The box hits Silicon Valley

    Nick Sayer07/16/2016 at 00:26 1 comment

    The box arrived here today.

Here are some pictures of the content:

Some SMD resistors and caps... and an... antenna?

Ooh. A very nice project box. I'm going to make off with that. I am betting I can make it into something cool.

I also am going to take a couple of those. They look very useful as GPIO references for R-Pi GPIOs.

    My, those are big diodes.

Intriguing. I've seen lots of boxes that go the other way...

    DRAM!

The box within a box. This was full of all sorts of very useful boards. I took an ISP programmer that was in a very cool looking aluminum USB case. I have to investigate that.

    And a note.

My additions: Three GPS Disciplined oscillators, plus some bare boards for some more and for an FE-580A GPS discipline module. Also, a couple of Pi Powers - perhaps for the two R-Pis I found in the box. There's a "divide by 3" clock circuit - feed it 9 MHz and get out 3 MHz. I'm also including two USB µISPs - my favorite AVR programmer (but I'm understandably biased). Also, a panel of crazy clock boards that gave me some trouble with programming. Fix 'em or part 'em. Same with a FTDI-be-gone board that wouldn't come up.

And this is a mostly full panel of crazy clock boards, and an unpopulated panel of AD8495 breakout boards.

Not pictured is a µSD-to-USB adapter, an old Apple laptop power supply and a Nike smart shoe to iOS-30-pin dongle.

The box will go to its next destination in tomorrow's outgoing mail.

  • Even more for the box

    Eric Thompson07/13/2016 at 18:14 1 comment

I decided this was a chance for me to get rid of stuff and not gain more. So I didn't take anything from the box but I added a bunch of stuff I hope someone will find useful.

    Qty = 2 Raspberry Pi Model A

    Pac Tec Plastic Enclosure

Qty = 2 Display keypads from Matrix Orbital

10 different packs of 0603 resistors

4 different packs of 0603 capacitors

    A few piezos

Qty=5 Pi GPIO reference card 26-pin and Qty=5 Pi GPIO reference card 40-pinThe box is now on it's way to California!

  • Starter box stuff!

    Jeremy g.06/26/2016 at 19:53 0 comments

I don't know if anything in here is terribly exiting but here is what I have to put in the starter box.

    • A bag of jelly bean pnp transistors take what you need or take them all.
    • A bag of 1n5000 diodes, good for rectifier setups.
    • A bag of 1k short lead resistors.

    A box of micro's / dev boards :)

    • 2 x cc1110 dev boards, sorry no cc debugger.
    • 1 x Arduino mega, the 8u2 is fried. The mega still programs via ICSP.
    • One of my attiny 84 dev boards.
    • A spark fun Bluetooth music board
    • A spark fun quick snap camera board.
    • A eye board from a Mr general robot.
    • A Hercules TMS570 dev kit
    • 2 x usb-ISP's refreshed with avr dude compatible fw.
    • An alarm clock seven segment display

    some random

    • a small world clock / calculator. Needs batteries and to be put back together.
    • A VGA to hdmi converter
    • A cfl tube power supply.
    • Some old dims, 2 x 8Mb
    • A multi terminal mechanical relay.
    • Two sets of 4mm banana jacks.
    • 2 plasma TV driver heat sinks.
    • A harddrive caddy?
    • Some random bits.

I hope this is good for a starter. I just need to figure out the rotation of the box. I kind of want to zigzag from all three places if there are enough people. But for now we may just go round robbin.

Stay happy, stay healthy, and keep hackin.

  • Cleaning the office :)

    Jeremy g.06/25/2016 at 22:03 0 comments

I am currently tasked with cleaning the office, and thus am creating a small pile to put in the starter box. I won't post a pic of my office as I'm sure it's pretty horrible :)

I will however post a pic of what will be inside the box soon.

We also need more people to make this work. We have me in Oregon, a few people in California and currently no one in Washington. So if you know anyone send them our way.

I want to get this rolling so it dosnt loose interest.

Stay happy, stay healthy, and keep hackin

I've got some SCSI hard drives and potentially a few parts to add, have to look through the lab.  In Washington, Spokane area.  Anyway, cool idea.

Thank you, The box is currently in Washington and will prolly be there for another week. When I sent it out I did not realize the person I sent it to would be out for the weekend. If you want join the project and fill out the google form and I will add you to the Washington stops.

I've got an absolute pile of "last year's" versions of the stuff in my TIndie store... All of it works, it's just not as nice as the new stuff.

The COW is exactly designed for this, get rid of stuff you don't need anymore so that someone who does need it can take it.  All while getting cool stuff that you need.

Do you have any idea how many 'tri state areas' there are?

Are you sure? yes | no

Jeremy g. wrote 06/25/2016 at 20:51 point

depends on how many states you consider :) if it's every state that touches at least two other states  (can a state only be included once). <- around 30 or so. If a state can be included more than once at least twice that.. I'm too lazy to count it all right now.

I'm only doing California, Oregon and Washington. :) someone else can start another tri-state box for three other states :)

Is that what you were asking? Or did I miss it completely?
