Center Flee

Center Flee is the name for interactive performance devices. The Smart Poi make music and light effects.

Center Flees are accelerometer driven, networked LED devices, spun like fire poi, making music and light effects. They respond to subtle changes in velocity, making a delicate conversation between performer and technology.

The Smart Poi: uses the accelerometer in many ways. One way is to translate the sensor data into RGB LED values, printing the colors into corresponding points in the rotational arc. Wirelessly the accelerometer data is transmitted to a computer using XBee Wireless protocol, creating music with each arc. Finally the accelerometer acts like a button, changing from one color sequence to another, starting with an 8-bit rainbow and then the separate red, green and blue channels. To change from one sequence to another, simply drop the device while at rest or stall while spinning. They are responsive and light to the touch, making for a delicate conversation between performer and technology.

The Hat: To keep the two smart poi in sync, the communication terminal, sewn into a hat, relays the sequence change. To further enhance the networked nature of the smart poi, the flowers on the hat change with the two poi.

What do you mean by balanced? The weight is nice, for spinning poi, if that is what you mean. Balanced light wise, the accelerometer sends different values to the LED by velocity. They have a nice effect. I wish I could find a video camera good enough to capture them. Next step, brighter LEDs. :)

These look great! Have you had any problems getting them balanced or have you not found this to be a problem?
