Description

Hi, we are from Argentina and we are working on a open source Braille embosser design, so that anyone can make one, improve it or or create their own version.
We use 3D printing and laser cut to generate most of the spare parts and also standard spare parts. The design is very similar to open source 3d printer Prusa i3 because it uses the same commercial components.
Many people in countries like mine with low budgets and not a lot of resources do not have access to these technologies and this affects education, culture and communication, so this could be a great solution. Our main goal is help anyone who wants to build a braille embosser by providing a simple design to assemble.
It is not finished, it needs work in the design, the electronics and mostly in the programming, but we want other people to join in.

Details

we have seen thousands of designs of braille printers on the internet made by students and developers in their homes, but none uses the open source methodology to be easily replicable at scale. The design is based on commercial domestic braille printers, which uses continuous paper to guarantee the correct functioning of the paper supply system in a simple way.

Dear All, Your mechanical seems excellent. Need more details. We can make a mobile app which will convert text material presented on the screen ( any format, doc, pdf, etc) into dot info, and transmit the same through the inbuilt blue tooth module in ascii form. ( 8 bits- corresponding to 8 solenoids, (presently you can use 6 dots to start with). The printer will have a bluetooth module ( acting as receiver), which will convert every ascii byte into dot info and print the same on the paper. After the preset number of character are printed ( embossed), the paper can be advance to the next line and start printing the second line.

Could you let me know what shall be the rough cost of the mechanical assembly ( without electronics) ? This will decide the cost/price of the braille printer.

I am looking forward for such low cost handy braille printer which should cost less than 90 USD, so that all visually impaired students in lower classes can have one personally.

Looking forward for a video of a working mechanism.
