  • Okay I'll go first, this is a list of crap I'm bringing that anyone can use.

    zakqwy11/05/2016 at 15:02 0 comments

As I stuff my backpack full of random shit this morning in south Pasadena, I'm reminded of all the cool projects I had in mind when I acquired said shit over the last few years. Generally speaking, I didn't bring any materials to the conference that I'm not willing to part with, although some of the more expensive items (such as the Moog slip ring) may require a bit more persuasion to pry from my clutches. My preference is that this stuff is used for badge hacking at the con, but I'm also happy to supply bits and pieces for off-site projects provided you eventually show me what you made.

    Boards

    • Teensy v3.2, v3.5, v3.6
    • Arduino Pro Mini (I've got a bunch)
    • 1bitsy
    • STM32F0 Discovery
    • STM32F4 Discovery
    • STM32F0 breakout (TSSOP20 version)
    • Particle Photon
    • Particle Electron (this will require significant persuasion)
    • Raspberry Pi breadboard GPIO breakout (belongs in this category, I guess)

    Sensors

    • Thermocouple w/amp breakout
    • Mic preamp breakouts
    • Barometric pressure sensor
    • A bunch of discrete phototransistors (SMT)
    • 38 kHz-specific IR receiver modules
    • PIR motion sensor
    • Round resistive force sensor (bare leads)
    • Precision strain gages, 350 ohm nominal, type EA-06-125BZ-350

    Output Devices

    • Muscle wire with springs and crimpie-dos, 50 um and 125 um
    • 9g servos with hardware
    • LEDs, all sorts of weird ones, mostly SMD. Red/Blue, bottom-mount RGB, 650nm deep red, IR, etc.
    • Obscenely large and intimidating brushless gimbal motor with passthrough shaft

    Bare components (mostly SMT)

    • AVR chips: ATtiny88, ATtiny44A, ATtiny45, ATmega328P
    • STM32F0 (TSSOP20 version)
    • LDOs: 5V 1A, 5v 50mA, 3.3V 0.6A
    • Misc ICs: HC595s (in an obscenely tiny package), gyros, Schottky diodes, comparators, op amps
    • Passives: trimmer pots, all different kinds of buttons (SMT, snap-action, etc), resistor networks, 0.1 ohm precision resistors, tantalum caps, etc.

    Other random interesting items

    • FR4, mostly 1/16" 1oz single sided
    • A few partial sheets of Dragonplate (CFRP)
    • A sheet of LED phosphor material (changes blue into white!)
    • A really nice 24-conductor Moog slip ring, currently wired with mostly parallel leads (but can be easily reconfigured)
    • 50' of 0.75mm plastic fiber optic cable
    • A few interesting high voltage items

Tools (that can be used but not taken)

    • Auto wire strippers
    • JST GH crimper with 4-position housings, 26 AWG wire, and SMT headers
    • Tin snips (great for cutting FR4)
    • Shitty calipers
    • Multimeter
    • Cutting mat
    • Extra Olfa box cutters with spare blades (for FR4 carving!)
    • USBtinyISP with a breadboard breakout
    • A few needle files
    • Various USB cables

    Consumables

    • Wire: 26 AWG, wire-wrap, 34 AWG magnet, a few high voltage leads
    • Solder, flux, and solder braid
    • Kapton tape, 1/2" and 1"

I'm probably forgetting a few things. If any of this crap seems useful, find me today or tomorrow.

Are there any dinner plans being discussed for Saturday night

Darn. Wish I saw this last night. Ended up exploring Pasadena on my own and experiencing In-n-Out for the first time 👍.

Hello! Is anyone going out tonight in Pasadena? My friend and I are just getting into town and wanted to see if any other superconference attendees are around?

mfarahws wrote 11/05/2016 at 02:59 point
I'm up for going out. The only thing to do is to pick a place I guess. Should we meet up at the German place, der wolfskop? Or do you have another suggestion?

ian lofgren wrote 11/05/2016 at 03:27 point

no that sounds cool! I don't know anything about the area really. Wanna meet there at 9?

Is the plan to meet at Apex at 4pm??  Whats the best way to get there without a car from LAX?? Anyone want to meet up for drinks in Pasadena tonight?

Hardie wrote 11/04/2016 at 17:55 point

I am in Pasadena now. Planning on going to Apex. Its definitely possible to get there with the metro. But it will take about 2 hours. Maybe grab a uber when you get to downtown.

Sweet. Im planning to head to apex from Pasadena later. Ubershare, anyone? Or a more adventurous metro ride?

I am walking around in passadena, set a time and a location and we can grab the metro.

Can't make it out to apex, but I'd definitely be up for grabbing a drink later. Anyone from the area have suggestions on a good/cheap bar nearby?

I can't make it out, but I'm a fan of this place if you like German beers http://www.derwolfskopf.com/

Apex meetup is planned for 4pm. I get in at about 1:30, So 4 should be a good time for most.

Its a pretty crazy trip on the metro from downtown. But I might just make it

Probably a long shot but here it goes.... So I planned to demo a project this weekend and have just got off a 40 hours straight hack session that ended in disaster. While nearing my final assembly I broke my LCD screen! What are the chances someone has a Sharp LS013B7DH03 they'd part with?

Didn't know if I could get time off work until last minute- looking for 2 tickets! Please let me know if anyone has some.

Did you try this puzzle? Someone can't make it, so they're giving their ticket away via a puzzle contest: https://hackaday.io/project/16670-hackaday-super-conference-ticket

Meredith Scheff-King wrote 11/04/2016 at 05:20 point

I'm working on it, but not sure I can solve it. Still looking otherwise- would be a bummer to come down to LA and not be able to crack it/get in.

How far is Apex from the conference center?  We arrive at LAX around 1:30 Friday

Are you sure? yes | no

Todd wrote 11/03/2016 at 19:54 point

It's going to take you 90mins or more to get from LAX to Apex.  Apex to SupplyFrame is a much easier 20-30min (~17mi).

Sort of off topic but if people are talking about cool places in LA, don't forget about Norton Sales in North Hollywood. Tons of surplus hardware from Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs from the surrounding Los Angeles Aerospace scene:

I have a software background not so much hardware. If I want to hack away on the badge what should I bring in order to work on it?

tdicola wrote 11/02/2016 at 20:47 point

It's a PIC processor on the badge and I think I heard there will be a MPLAB project available to make it easy to get started with programming.  Probably want to get MPLAB installed beforehand just in case: http://www.microchip.com/mplab/mplab-x-ide

edit: Oh actually this is probably it: https://github.com/Hack-a-Day/2016-Hackaday-SuperConference-Badge-Hacking

Todd wrote 11/02/2016 at 22:40 point

Good question. I followed @tdicola's advice and installed all that.  I was wondering if it would be a good idea to bring any tools, parts, instruments, or?
