As you can see on the pictures you'll find a lot of wires. I think this could be replaced by some band ca. 6-8 mm wide and about 15-20 cm long.
The whole thing would basically look like a flat ribbon cable with some bends on the most outter traces to bring them to the needed solder joints. (2nd picture)

As you can see, there already is a "receiver" pcb with a flex connector on it (3rd and 4th pictures). (Made by OSHPark)

Due to life/other projects/budget this did not progress any further since october 2017.

This would be some sort of surprise / gift to him :)
