IBM was a pioneer in the computing industry, and their engineer were masters of accomplishing great amounts of features with very little hardware. One example is the IBM Game Controller Adapter. It features support for 4 buttons and 4 analog potentiometers without using what we traditional know as an Analog-to-Digital(ADC) chip.
