A project log for Weather Station Featherwing

Measure and log ambient Temperature, Humidity, Pressure, Light, Lightning, and Volatile Gasses with a Feather!

After some feedback and further research into BME680 vs CCS811, I have finally gotten around to designing Rev2!

Changes include:

With Rev2, the overall price for materials has gone down significantly, since I have removed the CCS811 sensor. Using a combination of Mouser and Digikey, the price for components is $26.20, but with the shipping cost of two different orders. There will have to be two shipping costs, as the lightning detector antenna is only available from Mouser or the manufacturer.

My next step is to do some research into board and assembly houses, as I am not confident enough in my ability so solder the lightning and BME680 sensor by hand. If anyone has suggestions, please feel free to let me know! Being a college student, I have limited disposable income to spend on this project, so cheaper options are better.

Below are some photos of the board layout for Rev 2.

I do look forward to seeing how this develops; and, separately, what you find out as far as assembly houses (as I'd like to do that with my SoundWing).

For just a blank board creation, I've used https://jlcpcb.com/ in the past, which has pretty cheap prices for smaller boards. They are based in China so decent shipping time can be expensive. They also have a relatively recent SMT assembly service, which I have not heard anything about. Another company I've heard good things about is https://oshpark.com/, known for their purple PCBs. They are based in the US.

For board assembly/population, I have been recommended both https://www.pcbway.com/ (China based) and https://macrofab.com/ (Texas, USA based). PCBWay is cheaper, being China. I currently have the Rev2 WeatherStation board under review at PCBWay, to verify that it could be both made and populated by them. So far I have been happy with the feedback I received from them.

I shall take a good look at all of the above. :)
