MMS Face Shield

An open source PPE Face Shield created by Milwaukee Makerspace.

Similar projects worth following
Milwaukee Makerspace has developed an open source face shield. Our design is based on v3 of the 3DVerkstan design, North American 6 hole version.

We have modified the frame to be cut from 1/4" HDPE on a CNC router. HDPE (High-density Polyethylene) is often used for cutting boards and high-touch surfaces.

The shield will be stamped from 0.01" thick rigid clear vinyl. (We originally planned to cut with a drag knife on our CNC machine but we have found local companies that have offered to create a die and stamp them for us.)

Because of our material choices it will be easy to clean & sanitize these face shields. We're also facing a shortage of PETG sheets, so using clear vinyl that was available to us was a good option.

Milwaukee Makerspace is a 501(c)3 organization, all volunteer run, and we’ve got a few people who are doing a lot of work. Members are donating their expertise, machines, and materials, and some of them are donating their own money to this cause.

As an organization, we’ve also pledged a portion of our budget to this project, even though we’ve closed the space and suspended dues from members. We may be applying for grants to help us provide these PPE donations to local hospitals and clinics (and yes, we’ve already got a list of recipients we are working with.)

We are all volunteers trying to help our community. (At least three of our members were infected with COVID-19. Two of them had to be hospitalized.) This virus is affecting everyone, so we’ve all got to pitch in and help.

We released files today in the hopes others with access to CNC routers might be able to create these. We're using 1/4" HDPE sheets, and while we've got a partner stamping out the clear shield part, you can easily make them with a hold punch and any thin plastic.

Files are on GitHub, feel free to fork them, suggest improvements, etc.

Good call on the die-cutting - that should get your number up. I like the use of HDPE too - should make them easy to sanitize.
