If i assign a fixed mode, every mode works ...

Perhapps I have to sleep over it.

Easy ;) had the same last week with my gameboy printer. Well I'm guessing that with 33×3×9 bytes from your arrays you are dangerously close to the 1kb sram of your atmega16. Try storing the arrays in program memory. Seach for progmem. I hope that fixes it and i haven't jinxed it with saying "easy".
