It's difficult to get a picture to match the real world exactly but the display works as intended and I think the shape of the LEDs works well as segments in the display. Mounting the LEDs like this results in the display being only ~2.7mm thick. I did run into some issues that I would probably address in a second version. The LEDs are too bright on anything but the lowest brightness levels, using something thicker and more opaque as a diffuser might work better than the PCB material. Also it's pretty difficult to solder the LEDs to the PCB. It is definitely possible, it just takes some time and careful soldering. The distance between the LED pins and the PCB is pretty wide and bridging them is sometimes troublesome. Currently the display PCB is 1mm in thickness, increasing the thickness might help.
