Alternatives controler to play Mario Kart PC with a real feeling of racing

Our project is a alternative controler to play Mario kart PC. For the differents moves, we thought a lot and came with many ideas. There are 4 importants moves :

        1) the directions,

        2) use an object,

        3) put the object frontward/backward

        4) jump.

For the move 2, the idea is to use a plush and a pressure sensor . The idea is that the player have to press the plush to use an object and we add an sound when he press it.

For the move 3, the idea was to use a joystick like a gear lever but bigger and the system 2 will be on top. So when you want to put the object frontward, you push the stick frontward but it is to simple.

So the final idea is to use a presence sensor and the plush attached with a string to the hand, the player throw the plush to a dedicate zone to put the object frontward (a light turn on when it's done).

For the move 1, to move frontward/backward, the first idea was to use a real pedal systems and a toggle switch. The idea was to fix a stick in the chain so that when you pedal the stick activate the switch to move. But the pedal system is to complex and the stick might getting stuck in the mecanism. So we decide to keep the idea but built our own pedal system simplified, we will see how it will stand later.

Finally we decided to stop the pedal system because it is too difficult to make it and we don't have much time to finish the project so we change the bike 's pedal system by "car pedals". Our car pedals will be use with light sensor so the player will have to push a cardboard to activate  the sensor and then move forward.

Also for the move 1,  to go left/right,  the idea is to use a steering car and tilt sensor fixed on it so when you tilt the steering car you activate the tilt sensor. We also decided to make our own steering car in 3D printing.

We started the code for the move 3 thanks to Tinkercad but we have a problem with the light.

    Difficulties encountered:

    • loss of time due to the difficulty of getting the crankset to work, as well as the deterioration of the component if we had succeeded.
    • The handlebar base, which was originally to have been printed using a 3D printer, took us a long time to find another, more ecological solution.
    • pressure problem with the plush ar as the plush put on pressure as standard, plus we didn't get the pressure sensor, so we ended up replacing the system.
    • The problem of receiving the component made us really late on the project because of a bad communication and organization, so we did just test during 2 sessions instead of beginning the real circuit. And So we didn’t have time to use the gyroscope sensor and light sensor.
    • We had a problem about the connexion between the arduino and the game but thanks to the library Keyboard we succeed to have one of the system worked.

  • Gyroscope sensor

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 12:08 0 comments

For this sensor, we managed to configure an Arduino code that we find on a site but not in real life it didn't work because of the arduino card (after several attempts).

  • Pedals

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 11:46 0 comments

For the pedals, we did them first with a shitty project and then with the laser cutter machine.

  • Tilt sensor

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 11:35 0 comments

We did a test on tinkercad for the tilt sensor even so we would use a gyroscope sensor but like we didnt receive the sensor yet. But the code worked on tinkercad and not irl even after several times.

  • PIR sensor

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 11:09 0 comments

For the PIR sensor, we managed to configure an Arduino code that worked virtually but not in real life But, after several attempts and help with a friend, we managed to do it in real life. So we did the support of this in cardboard.

Also, like we didnt receive the pressure sensor in time, we decided to not do the move of putting the object front or backwards it is not usefull for the game. Also it is much more fun that the fact of throwing a plush irl have the effect to use the object in the game.

  • Support of steering car wheel

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 10:55 0 comments

We finally decided to not 3D printing our steering car wheel's support but doing it in cardboard. It is much simple and we don't waste a lot of plastic.

  • 3D print and plush problem

    romain.bouvet01/09/2024 at 10:48 0 comments

We noticed that in a plush the pressure will not change so we have to put the system in a balloon to have the pressure's variation.

We printed the steering car in 3D and modelized the support that we have to printed. For this system we have changed the sensor into a gyroscope sensor for a better system.
