Othermill Stand

The DesignLab needed a stand to accomodate an Othermachine Co. Othermill and the controller laptop in as small a footprint as possible.

Similar projects worth following
The Othermill requires a control computer, as all CNC machines do. In the Lab, we settled on using some Macs we had laying around to control the three Othermills we have for high speed machining and circuit board milling. However, the Othermill with the laptop next to it, takes up more counter space than I wanted.

This stand was designed by Majenta Strongheart as part of her role in the DesignLab during the summer of 2016.

For our units, we used 1/2" MDF and the shelves articulate on drawer slides from Rockler. The rear panel has large gaps that allow for cables to be passed through, and for cables or power supplies to be velcroed or ziptied, in an effort to keep things tidy.

Fabrication of most components was handled on our ShopBot PRSAlpha 96/48, but a jigsaw and some careful thought on clamping and straight edge guides would allow you to build this without any CNC equipment.

The choice of MDF wasn't the best, as the drawer slides need to be screwed into the "end grain" of the MDF shelving, which invariably causes them to split. In this revision I hope to fix that problem using brackets and a slight alteration in the spacing of the shelfs. You could also solve this by using better quality wood products: pre-drilling the end grain on plywood would suffer far less from splitting than MDF which is essentially wood foam.

When looking at the drawings, realize that I removed all fillets from the internal corners to emphasize the correct dimensions. If you are planning on cutting this using CNC equipment, you'll need to add at least the diameter of your cutting tool as a fillet for any of the internal radii.

The files below should have all the drawings you need to tackle this yourself in a variety of ways:

  • STEP file contains the full Fusion360 CAD model for you play with
  • CRV file contains the full layout of all parts in Vectric V-Carve format. Add tabs and toolpaths and ShopBot away!
  • SVG files of the leg and back support parts. These are the only two that aren't trivial to cut on a table saw so they're available in SVG format to import into any of your favorite 2D CAD/CAM packages.
  • PDF drawings of every piece so you can redraw in CAD or mark out on wood and cut manually.

Drawing 01 of 06 - Leg.pdf

Drawing of the leg of the Othermill stand. Two of these need to be fabricated. Note that all internal corners do not show fillets so that the dimensions are easy to visualize, but would need to be added.

Managed to get out to Rockler today now that we have a break in the weather. I dismantled one of the stands to pull the drawer slides off to take with me as examples. The slides are part of Rockler's "Centerline" series.

The bottom shelf uses Rockler's 100LB BLK OT 757 Series 16" drawer slides (Item # 47396)

The top shelf uses Rockler's 100LB BLK OT 757 Series 10" drawer slides (Item # 47057)

    • The 100LB is the weight rating
    • BLK is the finish (Black or Zinc)
    • OT means "Over Travel", meaning they will extend out farther than the length of the slide (multiple internal sliding sleeves allow this)
    • 757 Series means (I think) part of the "Centerline" series, whatever that means
    • 16" / 10" is the length of the slide when completely retracted

These are just the slides we happened to choose when we were at Rockler at the time. If you stick to the lengths of 10" for the top shelf and 16" for the bottom shelf, I wouldn't get too hung up on whether it's overtravelling, or Centerline, etc. Just make sure you buy the same brand, because the thickness of the slides is very important... the top and bottom shelves need to float on their drawer slides at the same distance from either leg when they're finally assembled and using different brands will most likely prevent that from happening.

Got the majority of the drawings and models uploaded as references. I need to go back to Rockler with the drawer slides so I can get the correct model numbers for them, and then I'll upload a BOM.

Over the course of the next few weeks I should be able to put together an assembly guide as well.
