The Holodeck: Whole-Room Environment Augmentation

A networked room that changes its appearance to simulate any environment.

Similar projects worth following
We've set out to make the Holodeck from Star Trek a reality - or at least as real as we can make it! Embedded RGB lighting, multiple projectors and a surround speaker system combine to project the atmosphere of a starry mountain night, a foggy valley, or even a battle in a desert city.

This project started out as an attempt to make our weekly D&D sessions more immersive. The entire room is controllable via tablet with simple buttons for different landscapes (mountain/tundra/river), time of day (dawn/day/dusk/night), weather effects (rain/snow/fog), and atmosphere (campfire, battle sounds, lightning/thunder). The RGB lights in the room are wirelessly controlled to match seamless screenshots of environments from Skyrim and other games, and ambient weather and music bring additional sensation.

The main system is complete, and we're now adding more locations and effects so that most common scene combinations (and a few uncommon ones) can be displayed.

As of 8/18, we have a stable prototype of the web app, that automatically pulls new buttons and icons from the code and displays to the user as we add new locations! We also worked a bit today on integrating the holodeck with our Home Automation System, so that we can enter "holodeck mode" with a simple verbal command.

Our next steps are to acquire a few more scenes from Skyrim; perhaps a forest shot and a a few major cities.
