Ideas have shifted from recessed lighting to wall mounted poles.  Wall mounted poles would offer some storage, provide passages for wiring, while taking less real estate than floor mounted lamps.  They would be bolted to the walls instead of using floor bases.  Lights would point up from the poles & bounce off the ceiling again.  In exchange for losing direct lighting, the bounced lighting could take advantage of recent LED improvements by being more powerful.  The economics favor edison screw fixtures instead of a custom surface mounted board.
