Drone Chassis

A project log for Drone Swarm

Drones of varying complexity swarm an area, forming a distributed sensor and actuator network.

I wanted to get started on the project yet I cannot solder here where I live, so what to do? Well, I do have a 3D printer so why not design and build a case for the circuit board of the light sensor drone? I did so and it looks like this (so far):

it's just a simple box designed to fit the 1/4 breadboard PCB's sold by Adafruit. The idea is that the box can be resized for different drone types using different multiple Adafruit PermaProtoBoards. I happen to like the little things you see.

The top and bottom have the same size and thickness of the Proto boards so you could in a pinch just use the side walls and put three circuit boards together very compactly. It is, however, designed to be enclosed for weather proofing. The front and back walls are yet to be designed.

The bottom has a pair of snap studs for holding the PCB in place while still allowing it to be snapped in and out of the enclosure.

While this drone is a sensor and communicator only with no propulsion, I have been daydreaming of a propelled device and I thought it might be cool to somehow have a four wheeled vehicle that travels on land and also flies by spinning the four wheels much faster as the hubs are propellers. Just a thought. Would be cool if it worked.
