4011 - ring modulator

A project log for zynthia - sequencer synthesizer

using a 40106, 4051 and a 4029 to make some noise, following the Logic Noise series on the blog

I totally like this stuff more and more! I found a ring modulator circuit built with a single 4011 over here: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=90804.0

I plan to add a frequency divider / D- flipflop made out of a second 4011 to auto sync the modulator, with no clue how it will sound or if it will work.

Makes me want to buy an oscilloscope.

Here's the D-flip-flop in NAND gates turned to a T-flip-flop, which I didn't use because reasons - taking the 4017 instead.

Great.  I've never built the 4011 ring-mod, but it's supposed to be a classic.  (MS-20 and all that.)

Let us know how it sounds?  Probably won't be all that different (from the 4070 XOR chip) with square-wave inputs, but will be more interesting with more analog-y waves like triangles or sines.

And stoked that you're following along!

I wanted to make a video already... but I ripped the sequencer apart to rewire it and had no time for soldering it back together, yet. The plan is to make another box for the ring mod as well. I like the sound when a second generated signal is really close, it all gets spacey, but I took the 4017 for frequency division to get a synced modulation instead (since it only has 4 steps which compares HIGH and LOW of two signals). The 4011 was what I had around and I found the ring modulator a while ago, when I was looking for an interesting project for the chip.

I'm also following your youtube channel to get a sneak peek for the logic series!
