Low Cost Wireless Home Automation and Security

This is an IoT based wireless Home Automation and Security System

Similar projects worth following
We have seen a lot of home automation systems in the past but with the trend of Internet of Things the systems are getting cooler. So this will be another IoT based low cost Home Automation and Security system which involves various sensor nodes connected to a gateway node via the famous nrf24l01+ radio modules which in turn will be connected to the internet via WiFi.

This is a Home Automation project that I started recently. The main aim of this project was to make home automation and security low cost and low power. The basic framework consists of equipments for two room apartment. Each room will have a PIR Motion Sensor and a 2 channel relay to automatically control the appliances in the room. For security an RFID based entry is installed along with a magnetic door switch. For windows an obstacle sensor is installed for unauthorized break in through windows. The obstacle sensor sensitivity will be calibrated such that it does not detect false positive while opening or closing the windows. all the devices will be acting as wireless nodes and will be interacting only with the main controller. The main controller will collect all the data from the nodes and perform tasks as required by the automation system.

The main controller will also act as a WiFi gateway and push all the sensor data to a cloud based service called Thingspeak. The main controller will also have a GSM module in case there is no internet connection or WiFi. We can view the sensor data from anywhere in the world by logging in to our Thingspeak account or we can also create an Android App to view it.

Since the sensor and actuator nodes will be wireless hence they need to be very low powered so that it can run on battery for at least a year. Since Thingspeak can only parse data once every 15 seconds we will be putting our nodes into sleep for 16 seconds using the Low Power Library from Rocket Scream.

The total estimated budget of the project is Rs. 10000 - Rs. 15000 which comes to around 159 - 238 USD.

This is the basic setup that I will be implementing in this project but I have plans to upgrade the system with surveillance cameras, on board OLED display with keypad for password based access and Notifications.

  • Updated Source Code

    Sounak Ranjan Das06/03/2015 at 08:46 0 comments

Guys I have updated the source code. You can get it from my github repo.

These functionalities have been included but they might not be working at some time since it is still under development.

    • Update data to Thingspeak every 16 sec interval.
    • Receive control modes (Manual/Automatic) from Thingspeak Talkback.
    • Intrusion detection

Some things still left to do are

    • Integrating GSM module (facing some problems here)
    • Developing an Android app to control the system.

    Helps and suggestions are appreciated.

  • Some Messy Soldering

I know I suck at soldering but heres a pic of the relay module that I soldered. It was very tiresome job to solder all the components together.

  • RFID working

Finally got the RFID module to work after long coding hours this weekend. Thanks to Sparkfun tutorials for help. I have updated my repo to check out the codes. Here are some cool working pics.

  • Source Code V1.0

    Sounak Ranjan Das05/14/2015 at 19:23 0 comments

Uploaded the first version of the source code. Although all the nodes have not been tested. But tested it with one obstacle sensor. Seems to work fine. Faced some problem with the Enrf24 library. Previously I declared the structure variables globally but it was causing problem for reception don't know why. Then tried to declare them locally within the functions and copied them later to another structure. Now it seems to work fine.

    Still need to work on

    • RFID based authentication
    • Pushing data to Thingspeak
    • GSM based notification
    • Automatic control and security
    • Android App

  • Sending Data between Arduino and Launchpad

    Sounak Ranjan Das05/08/2015 at 15:23 0 comments

Today after a lot of tinkering and coding finally I got communications up between Arduino and the Launchpad. I used the RF24 library by Maniacbug for Arduino and Enrf24 library by Sprillis for Launchpad. One thing that I learned while doing this is that we need to initialize each and every settings before sending and receiving data because the libraries has different default settings. My utmost thanks to the blog http://arduino-for-beginners.blogspot.in/2013/11/stellaris-launchpad-with-nrf24l01.html for solving my problem. I also tried sending structures between the two and it worked great. Just had to look up page 9 of the energia forum for this.

The example just sends random Red Green and Blue values as a structure. Check out my GitHub Repo for codes.

    • —Each member will have an RFID tag for themselves.
    • —The RFID tags will be needed to gain access to the house.
    • —If anyone opens the door without using RFID tag alarm will be raised.
    • —If anyone tries to enter through the window alarm will be raised.
    • —If motion is detected in spite of no one in the house alarm will be raised.
    • —If members are there in the house and motion is detected in a room the Fan and lights will turn on. In night mode light will automatically turn off.
    • —The members can manually turn on or off their appliances and monitor the sensors through the smartphone app after entering the password.
    • —The app will also have provision to schedule on and off for the appliances.

Hi, I liked this project, as we have similar objectives. In my project #Home Smart Mesh , I focus more on the custom RF protocol which is independent from the HW, I have it on STM8L, STM32 with the nRF24 same as you here, but also running on readily available nRF51 low power beacons, which can make ideal dash buttons, switches,... I also tried to bring together multiple sources MQTT, OpenHAB into a time series database with an advanced available dashboard "Grafana". I do not have arduino, so you could add it and take advantage of the eco system, all is of course open source.

I see no security implemented. Anyone with a NRF module can receive and send messages to your network.

For control and automation you could use node-red and node-red-dashboard. I would also switch to MQTT as a communication protocol between CC3200 and the rest of the world.

This is something I was also thinking of doing at some point. In my vision, an ESP8266 module was used instead of CC3200 (reduce the cost even further). Each NRF module would pair (via a serial link, or NFC) with the ESP module. During this pairing they would exchange a symmetric key and the communication info (addresses, channel, etc). Also, all messages exchanged  would start with requesting a nonce, etc. During the pairing, the NRF module would tell ESP what topics should be subscribed and on what topics should it publish once it receives a message from the NRF. So the ESP module would be just a generic, two-way, MQTT to NRF bridge, each NRF module knowing it's specifics (what topics it wants to listen, on what topics it wants to publish).

What do you think?
