I spent a good portion of the day searching the Internet high and low for how to hook up a thumbstick to a Raspberry Pi, and it turns out I either need an Arduino to do that or an integrated circuit that I don't have (I believe it's an MCP3008). Great. I guess I'm going to have to stick with buttons or scrap mobility altogether. If anybody can point me in the direction of an Instructable, Stackexchange entry, Hackaday project or something similar to help out, I would be eternally grateful. Frustratedly, Mister Malware

If you want something that acts like a standard joystick, there's always pretending to be one. Xin-Mo (CN board maker) has a usb-based board. However, a dual 555 and a hacked up mouse might do the trick (555 puts out phases that "move" the mouse). Alternatively, the Teensy can do much of that, and more.
