Layout: Rough Idea #2

A project log for Pi/Arduino Prototyping

An all-in-one development platform featuring a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino, a HDMI display screen and a breadboard area.

This layout is starting to grow on me, somewhat...

The concept is the same: same shape, roughly (albeit it wider) - but rather than having an open section for the prototyping area it sees the Mega and GPIO breakout moved to the back of the wedge shape. The breadboard will go alongside the screen on the front too.

The breadboard, Arduino and GPIO breakout would all be recessed to bring their pins/connections as flush as possible with the case to allow for a smother look.

The side panels will ow contain the cutouts previously featured on the back panel; one side for power, and one side for USB breakouts.

UPDATE

Thanks, Stefan:

I finally read up on the details and all the logs and so far I like this concept better since it's more compact. However, I think making the connections from the back of the unit (especially from the RPi GPIO breakout) to the front will get in the way of the display. I'd probably just embed the other end of the IDC cable next to the breadboard and have labels at the sides of the connector. The connections from the Arduino shouldn't be as problematic but having them on the other side of the breadboard might be a nice touch. Maybe this would unnecessarily clutter the front with jumper wires but the advantage would be that these wire connections would be more easy to double check than if you have to jump between the front/top and the back.

Hi Stefan

Thanks for taking the time to read through my waffling :-)

That is a great suggestion; I hadn't even thought of just using the ribbon cable from the Pi breakout; I was just looking at the full breakout board. To be honest the connectors on the breakout are a bit fiddly for a fat-fingered-fellow like me, so having the cable operating as a set of female headers is much nicer!

I will definitely incorporate that into my little etchings tomorrow. I will have a crack at making a proper design once I get to grips with 2D/3D design.
