Based on inexpensive and easily-available components, the aim of this project is to achieve a versatile switch-mode adjustable DC regulator that is compact, low-cost, reliable and efficient. When connected to a suitable DC power brick, it can replace the bulky, expensive conventional lab DC power supply, and serve as a helpful companion to electronics hackers.

The switching topology and modern MOSFET switching device achieves vastly better efficiency than conventional linear regulator schemes. The classic, highly flexible TL494 PWM control IC forms the core of the control circuit, making the feedback circuitry straightforward and easily understandable to amateur electronics hobbyists. Extensive use of low-pitch surface-mount components balances the ease of assembly and small size.
