Do or Donut SAO

donut shaped LED matrix SAO

Why do I start stuff like this?

From the picture it looks almost done, but far from it! This was just a layout test. I need to redraw everything, make it smaller and find out the arrangement of the LEDs first. Some things have to be fixed in software, as the original layout for the IS31FL3731 is a 16 x 9 LED matrix and I intend to fold it on it self or rather turn both matrices by 90 degrees. That makes the data for the rows would look somewhat like that:

1-10-2-11-3-12-4-13-5-14-6-15-7-16-8-17-9-18

I do have to arrange it like that, otherwise the routing would turn into a nightmare!

The title says it pretty much, but I had some trouble getting somewhat reasonable priced IS31FL3731 in SSO, while you can get the QFN version just anywhere. My current BOM for one donut is around 7 Euros now, which still seems reasonable. 800 LEDs in 0603 are coming my way, too. Hundreds of red, yellow, orange, green, blue, white, pink and purple.

I've chosen to go with JLCPCB and order 5 white test boards and a bunch of LEDs.

Why do you start stuff like this? ... Maybe because it may be awesome? ;)

Can there be different colored donut icings?

I'd love to get a pink version at one point, but the white can be replaced by purple, green, blue, yellow and red atm. I do think that white fits random colors the most though.
